Mountain Climbing Preparation for Beginners: A Complete Guide to Avoid Being "Surprised" on the Trail

Mountain climbing has become a trend among Indonesian youth. The beauty of the view above the clouds is indeed enticing, but for beginners, mountains are not just a place for photos. Mountains are extreme environments where weather conditions and terrain can change in minutes.

Thorough preparation is the difference between a fun adventure and a miserable experience. As your adventure companion, Hikemore has summarized essential preparation guidelines to ensure your first climb is safe, comfortable, and of course, stylish.

Figure 1: Preparation done at home is much better than panicking when you are already at the starting point of the climb (Basecamp).

1. Physical and Mental Preparation

Don't underestimate mountain terrain. At least 2 weeks before the climb, start regularly doing cardio exercises such as jogging, swimming, or climbing stairs. This is important to train your lungs and leg muscles to prevent cramps.

Mentally, you must be prepared for discomfort: cold air, sleeping on a hard surface, and being far from city facilities. Remember, the summit is a bonus; the main goal is to return safely.

2. Research Your Target Mountain

For your first climb, choose a mountain with beginner-friendly trails, such as Mount Gede (via Putri), Mount Prau, or Mount Andong. Find out about water sources, camp locations, and permits (Simaksi). Never hike alone; join experienced friends or use a guide.

3. Essential Gear Management

Apply the principle of multifunctionality so that your bag is not too heavy. Here is a mandatory list for beginners:

Hikemore Equipment Checklist:

  • Hiking Shoes: Must have strong soles and be able to protect the ankles.
  • Windproof/Water-Resistant Jacket: To withstand strong winds and cold mountain dew.
  • Quick-Dry Pants: Forget jeans! Use Hikemore quick-dry pants to make your steps lighter and prevent getting cold easily if wet.
  • Carrier Bag: Make sure the bag has Batrex Sewing stitching to be strong enough to carry logistics for several days.
  • Change of Clothes: Use layering techniques (base, mid, and outer layer).

4. Logistics and Health Management

Bring high-calorie but practical-to-cook food, such as instant noodles (as a supplement), cereal, chocolate, and honey. Don't forget to bring a water bottle (Tumblr) to reduce plastic waste on the mountain. Also, prepare a personal first aid kit containing antacids, wound medicine, and body warmers (Hot pack).

5. Hiking Ethics: Leave No Trace

As smart hikers, we must preserve nature. Apply the principle: "Take nothing but pictures, kill nothing but time, and leave nothing but footprints." Always bring your trash back down to the city.
